Minah Tsikati
La Gumbi
1963 – 2008
Tintsaba lost a valuable friend on Tuesday 22 July when Minah Tsikati, Tintsaba’s senior silversmith, died suddenly in a car accident.
Minah was a cornerstone of Tintsaba, having started as a basket weaver soon after the company first began in 1985. Minah’s eye for detail and technical perfection quickly stood out and she grew within the company from strength to strength. She joined the natural jewellery workshop when it began 1991 and then became the silversmithing apprentice when Tintsaba established the new project in 1999.
In the nine years that she was the senior silversmith, Minah showed an exceptional genius and excelled at producing fine and beautiful work. She trained apprentices patiently and whole-heartedly. Minah was always the person to go to when a manufacturing or staffing challenge needed solving.
The silver workshop, and indeed all of the staff, have picked up where Minah so capably left off. Through prayer and supporting one another, the Tintsaba family is adjusting to this new reality as life continues. Khetsiwe and Nomphumelelo have picked up the reins in the workshop and are capably carrying out all that Minah taught them.
